Clubhouse – What you need to know

March 2021

Reading time: 3 minute(s).

Clubhouse is a social networking app based on audio-chat. It currently has about 2 million weekly active users, according to its CEO, Paul Davidson, and is fast becoming one of the most talked about new platforms online.

Straight out of Silicon Valley and being widely reported as ‘the next big thing’ in social media, we’ll tell you why everyone is talking about it.

Joining Clubhouse

Because Clubhouse operates on an invite-only method, you’ll need an existing Clubhouse user to send an invite from their app giving you access to set up an account.

This might not last forever, as the creators have announced that their goal is to complete the beta stage of the app’s development and then “open up Clubhouse to the whole world”.

How Clubhouse works

Combining the popularity of podcasts with the ever-effective FOMO (fear of missing out) method, Clubhouse is a live platform; everything is happening live and isn’t available for playback at a later date. If you’re not on the app at a certain point, you’ll miss what’s going on.

When a new user signs up, you’ll be given a selection of topics to choose based on how much they interest you. From business and health to beauty or technology, the app will deliver information based on your interests and the more topics you select, the more conversation rooms and individuals the app will recommend that you join or follow.

From joining rooms to creating them...

As well as joining various rooms, you can also create your own. You can opt to make your room Open to all, Social events that only invite people you follow, or Closed events with a specific invite list that you create.

Once you create an event, you are then the moderator, while everyone else who enters the room is a listener.

The moderator has the power to pull listeners from the audience and make them speakers.

Right now, not many people are on Clubhouse but once it moves past beta stage, the company plan to go big. Instagram is driven by images, Twitter hooks us with words and Facebook gives us, well, a combination of everything but Clubhouse is a free social network for audio.

Considering Clubhouse

If you want to know more about a certain subject, then listening to an expert on Clubhouse really is great. The interesting thing will now be to see how the app develops as more and more users sign up.
